Biography
Dr. M. Jahangir Khan’s diaries introduce us to a life lived during crucial changes in the shape of the sub-continent. M. Jahangir Khan was born in British India and participated in the freedom movement. After the partition, he emigrated to Lahore, Pakistan, from Jalandhar, India, and witnessed Pakistan’s two divisions. These diaries are, therefore, of great interest to any student of history.
Dr. Jahangir Khan obtained a Bar-at-Law from Middle Temple, London, and a Ph.D. in Mughal History from Cambridge University, England. During this time, he worked closely with Chaudhry Rehmat Ali for an independent Pakistan.
Dr. Jahangir Khan’s never-ending list of achievements provides another reason to read these diaries. As a sportsman, he played cricket for Punjab and Cambridge Universities and the All-India Test teams in the 1930s. In 1929, he set the record for India in the Javelin throw during Punjab University’s intercollegiate athletics competition in Lahore. This was his first-ever javelin throw. He represented Punjab University and All-India in athletics. In the 1960s, he was the manager of the Pakistan Cricket team during their tour to India.
From 1939 to 1967 Dr. M. Jahangir Khan served as an educationist. He was the principal of various colleges in India and Pakistan, served as an inspector of schools, colleges, and training institutions, and was the last Director of Public Instruction in West Pakistan. He retired as an Education Officer and ex-officio Joint Secretary to the Department of Education, West Pakistan.
After retirement, he became the Director of the Research Society of Pakistan at the University of Punjab.
During this period, he also held the post of Provincial Scout Commissioner in West Pakistan and participated in various U.N.O conferences.
As the father of test cricket player, Majid Khan and grandfather of test cricket player Bazid Khan, Dr. M. Jahangir Khan’s family is the second family in the world to have produced cricket test players in three consecutive generations.
